The project

Medpath is composed of three projects (i.e., Medfish in France & Spain, BluFish in Italy, and HellasFish in Greece). Medpath aims to capitalize on the results of the three projects and to make further progress towards enabling fisheries in the Mediterranean to implement improvement actions and achieve higher degrees of environmental sustainability, as measured against the MSC Fisheries Standard performance indicators.

Helping the Mediterranean fisheries moving towards sustainability:
Medpath utilizes MSC pre-certification tools, in a strategic way, to engage multiple Mediterranean fisheries and stakeholders simultaneously, and achieve the ultimate goal of helping fishers, governments and other relevant Mediterranean stakeholders achieve sustainability in local fisheries.

The first stage of the “Pathway to Sustainability” model involves the preliminary scanning and mapping of fisheries and fishery stakeholders. In the 2nd stage, the MSC Fisheries Standard is strategically used as a benchmark for sustainability, that helps to develop pre-assessment reports for a selection of the fisheries mapped in the previous stage, highlight gaps regarding management and stock status of target species and reveal the impacts on different elements of the ecosystem. In the 3rd stage, through participatory processes engaging key fishery stakeholders, the pre-assessments are used as a basis for developing action plans for improvement, which fisheries can use as a roadmap for sustainability. Finally, project partners support fishery stakeholders in the implementation of the action plans towards higher levels of sustainability and, eventually, certification.

The aim of Medpath now is to test and implement a set of complementary tools and methodologies, to support the efforts of the project fisheries movements towards greater sustainability.

Fact & figures:
4,570 fisheries have been scanned, 150 characterized in further detail and 28 of those have been pre-assessed against the MSC Fisheries Standard. 15 action plans for improvement have already been finalized and validated by stakeholders, and 10 more are currently being defined. 6 of those action plans are already being fully or partially implemented (7 more will start their implementation during 2021).

Objectives / results

Composed of three projects - Medfish in France & Spain, BluFish in Italy, and HellasFish in Greece - Medpath supports fisheries into the implementation of actions to achieve higher degrees of environmental sustainability, as measured against the MSC Fisheries Standard performance indicators.

- Facilitate and support the implementation of action plans for improvement in fisheries.

- Identify best practices, implement technical solutions and compile/disseminate project case studies/lessons learned.

- Build and ensure fishery stakeholders' capacity to support improvement processes towards more sustainability beyond the project’s end date.

- Research on financing mechanisms tailored to enable future implementation of action plans.
